Sandra M. Blake
Sandra M. Blake was born in Columbia, SC in 1947. She developed a talent and love of needle arts at her mother’s knee. Her love of design led her to attend Howard University in Washington, DC, where she earned a B.S. degree in Clothing and Textiles in 1973. It was here that Sandra became immersed in the expressions of the beauty and art of African American history and culture. Her works are sculptures in fabric, porcelain and polymer clay. They are portraits as well as her “imaginings”. In documenting the work Sandra has found another creative outlet in photography, and digital imagery.

In 1978, she started Sanjean Originals™ to showcase her work. Her collectible dolls can be found in the collection of South Carolina State Museum. Sandra was honored in 2009 as one of the AT&T SC African American History Calendar for 2009. Sandra is a featured artist in the book Black Dolls: Proud, Bold and Beautiful published by Reverie 2004. She has exhibited at the American Jazz Museum and the African American Museum of Philadelphia.

Sandra creates her work from her studio in Blythewood, SC. Her work includes originals, limited editions and commissions. Her most recent work is a portrait doll of President Obama.
